Developing Concentration

Concentration is the action of gathering one’s attention. But in today’s age of internet and gadgets, students intend to lose their track. They leave their desk for water or anything else and end up spending time on social networking sites like Facebook or start watching videos on YouTube or checking up their cellphones. These hamper their span of concentration. Losing your concentration is natural. The human brain tends to notice things which in general grab more attention. To avoid unnecessary attention and increase your concentration here are some guide lines.

  •  Pay attention

It is necessary for you to be focused on what you are reading. Students must try to keep themselves away from all sorts of distractions in order to increase their concentration span. The biggest distraction now-a-days are social networking sites. To avoid this, students should study in a room where such distractions are not available. This can be achieved by keeping the cellphones, computers and other gadgets in a separate room.

  • Be Engaged

Your mind should be engaged in your subjects, try to involve yourself in various arguments or discussions regarding the subject of your interest. Also involve your senses which help you to track the information, likewise read out aloud while studying.

  •  Concentration Tracker

Maintain a track wherein you know at what time the concentration level is less and at what time you have maximum the level of concentration. This will give you an idea about planning your study schedule. You can study the most difficult subject when your concentration is at its peak and the least difficult subject when it is at a lower level.

  • Time Distribution

Time is the most important aspect thata student must manage. It is important to distribute your time. Don’t try to study everything at the same time and then take a long break.Instead take several small breaks in between the study time. However, in these short breaks don’t indulge in the activities which interest you more such as watching television, your hobbies, etc. Instead, a short nap is quite helpful.

  • Structure information

If you have a vast course, structure the information that you have studied. This can be done by breaking down the course into brief segments. Creating segments will help you in memorizing and recollecting a particular information in a short span of time.

  • Understand information

After creating segments, try to make sense from that information. Understand more and more about that subject or a particular topic. The information that you have understood will be in your memory for a long duration of time.

  • Special Techniques

Few techniques which prove helpful in escalating concentration

1. Association:

In this technique try to link your topic with a person or any material or event which took place in your life. Due to which whatever you read or memorize will be permanent.

2. Mnemonics:

There are many points in a particular topic so form their mnemonics which means form a formula by considering their first letters. For example, to remember the colours in a rainbow we generally use the term “VIBGYOR”. It refers to the colours violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.

3. Visualize

It is said that humans can recollect those things which they have seen than those which they have just read or heard. So try to represent the information in diagrammatic form.

  • Review immediately

Revision is must. We can’t retain things for a long time unless we review them periodically. This builds up concentration and focus.

  • Eat healthy

Food is the supplement for the body.To have maximum concentration, healthy eating is most important.

  • Get sufficient sleep

Sleep improves your concentration as your mind is refreshed and the feeling of alertness can be experienced.
