The Medical Council of India, Delhi is responsible for medical education in India. Students for Postgraduate medical courses are selected strictly on the basis of their academic merit. For determining the academic merit for admission into post graduate , the university/institution may adopt any one of the following procedures both for degree and diploma courses:
The Medical Entrance Exams basis for the admission of candidates into a variety of courses that are being offered in many Medical Colleges and Institutes all over India are performed on an All India level as well as a State level. An MBBS degree with registration by the Medical Council of India is the basic requirement for all graduate courses in the field of medicine and surgery. Some national level institutions also conduct their own entrance exams. Most of the Govt. Medical Colleges make available admissions only to Indian Nationals on the basis of All India Medical Entrance exams. However, there are NRI/ Overseas student quotas in few Government Medical Colleges to make available admissions to NRIs and overseas students.
Every state has fixed number of seats offered for various specialties which the medical graduates can choose based on availability and merit. 50 per cent of these seats are filled by a common entrance examination i.e. AIPGMEE, conducted in November-December. This examination is a three and a half hour multiple choice question (MCQ) paper and 25 per cent negative marking. 50 per cent seats can be claimed by any graduate from any state through counseling depending on their rank in the test. The remaining seats are filled by individual state exams conducted between February and March in various states.
Each state has its own examination format, though for most of the states, the format sticks to the single best answer. There are exceptions like PGI Chandigarh with multiple correct answers format. The Exam consist of MCQs with total number of questions varying from 150 to 300 with/without negative marking.
